My best friend from childhood had him as a professor--she just loved him. And as for me, I just love The Tales of Hoffmann; I read them my junior year. Like the operetta, too. Or does it qualify as an opera?

I think it's a full-blown opera. The film is not necessarily a faithful representation of all the music—it's in English translation—but it's an amazing piece of strangeness and art.
