I love Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer. I actually found them because I heard them live on some folk radio station, I think right after Drum Hat Buddha had come out; they did "Tillman Co." (from which my mother guessed that he had grown up at least partially in Oklahoma because of the line about "blood run thicker than bottomland mud") and "I Go Like the Raven" (inspired, he said, by a dream in which he saw "a Tibetan raven goddess dancing on a mound of skulls"), and that was it. There's not enough mythic folk in this world that I could pass up people who write lyrics like "Climb me a crooked oak, scar-face, bible-black / Swing this shovel till it cracks the sky." I am still very annoyed he's dead.
