On the one hand, I have an incipient double ear infection to match my eyes and probable RSV as the cause of it all and in consequence have just slammed a dosage of prednisone intended to open my head like a Saturn V. On the other, partly because I make references of this nature in conversation with doctors and partly because of the tone of voice, apparently, in which I exclaimed during a discussion of the over-prescription of antibiotics, "You're a homeostasis! Don't kick it!" the urgent care doctor who is four chapters into Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary (2021) declared that she is going to hear the rest of the book in my voice, which I am counting as a win.

I really enjoyed it, and I had been moderately favorable on Weir's The Martian (2014). I loved the timing of its sprung double narrative. selkie's spouse recommended it to me in strong terms and was right to do so. Was also right that it would have made a bang-up radio drama, which does not seem to have happened, although the audiobook won an award.

My son has seen the film four times, including using his own money to see it in IMAX, having devoured the audiobook. I can't do anything with space travel, but it's really rare for my household members to agree so strongly that an experience is worth repeating.

I already knew that Rocky had been done primarily with practical effects and was looking forward, but I just found out that Rocky's chief designer goes back to Return to Oz (1985) and Labyrinth (1986) and Little Shop of Horrors and The Storyteller (1987) which means he's first-generation with characters built meticulously out of animatronic puppeteering and now I am frankly stoked to see the film on those technical-artistic grounds alone.
