choco_frosh just came by in the nor'easter which had better be amending our drought and dropped off the attractively Manly Wade Wellman-sounding T. Kingfisher's What Stalks the Deep (2025) and a bagful of apples, including a Golden Russet and a Northern Spy. Digging into my book-stack was the best part of last night. I remain raggedly flat, but I really hope this person whom selkie brought to my attention gets their Leo Marks fic for Yuletide.

Sure. I haven't read enough Wellman to have that reaction. The Emrys comparison comes from a shared moral position of "Just because this is a 'monstrous' Other doesn't mean that it is Obligate Evil."

Northern Spy is a great apple name. I've never had a Golden Russet, but russets in general are my favourite.

They're delicious! The major one around here is the Roxbury Russet, but I have had Golden Russets before and they are crisp and strong and supposedly cooking apples if you don't mind them falling completely apart in the process, although I've always just eaten them. They really are gold-colored under the russeting. Northern Spies are incredibly fragrant with a flavor to match and I have no idea where the name comes from. I don't remember what else choco_frosh brought me. A range of sizes and shades of red, which really doesn't narrow it down.
