Great-grandpa took shrapnel all along one side somewhere in Virginia before he deserted and went home to provide for his family. Dad was bombed and torpedoed at Pearl Harbor a couple months before his enlistment was up, but he made it through that particular "for the duration." Big brother number two was KIA in Vietnam when I was six; Dad said he'd pay for his other sons to go to Canada if necessary for them to avoid the draft. He didn't have to, fortunately.
