My four hundred eyes take me from A to B

[personal profile] julian set me the six-question meme with the letter S.

1. Something I hate: Stupidity. Selfishness. Spinelessness.

2. Something I love: The sea is the shoo-in, but still true. Symbolism, the arts movement. Stars. Surrealism. Sleep.

3. Somewhere I have been: Shutesbury. Sligo. Sessa Aurunca. I thought I had been to Sidney on account of the air museum, but it seems to be actually in North Saanich and I am trying to figure out how we got there from Seattle.

4. Somewhere I would like to go: Singapore.

5. Someone I know: [personal profile] spatch! [personal profile] selkie! Really not Sam Waterston, but I did meet him that one time in the grocery store.

6. Favorite movie: Singin' in the Rain (1952). Splash (1984). The Seventh Seal (1957). I wouldn't top-rank it, but I just greatly enjoyed, starring Belita the skater, Suspense (1946).

Feel free to ask for a letter to propagate the meme.

There are three different ferry systems that would take you to the general--

(Pauses)

Wait, unless you just mean that Google Maps is being wonky and showing you the wrong museum.

(Slowly unlaces fingers)

Carry on.

(But I was thrilled by the idea that you might've been on the Island at some point.)

Were the same ferry systems in place about twenty-five years ago?

Yes, they would have been. You would have had (and still have) three ways to get to Vancouver Island directly from the states. You could have taken the Clipper (walk-on only) directly from Seattle. You could have taken the Coho (car or walk-on) from Port Angeles. Or you could, had you for some reason been in the San Juan Islands, taken a ferry almost right to your destination.

Alternatively, you could have driven across the border and then taken a ferry from Vancouver to Sidney, but that seems perverse unless it was your loop home on a longer trip.

I don't think I've ever been to the aviation museum here (though I have been to the one in Seattle). The airport and Sidney are more or less contiguous, but I guess it could be that the airport counts as North Saanich instead.

The address may be technically North Saanich, but it looks closer to Sidney on the map. I don't think they're very far apart. Wikipedia even says it's in Sidney. https://www.reddit.com/r/VictoriaBC/comments/198m8ky/comment/ki8ed77/ amused me.

I know Sligo only from the definition assigned to it in The Meaning of Liff: "An exotic and undescribed sex act that celebrities are supposed to get up to in private, eg: to commit sligo."

It's one of the few entries where I can recall both the location and the otherwise-nameless thing it's used for.

(There's a series of entries where I can't recall any of the placenames borrowed, but which collectively give a detailed account of the experience of recognizing somebody walking towards you from the opposite end of a long hallway; and trying to pretend you haven't seen each them yet so you don't have to keep smiling, waving, doing silly pirate impressions etc, at each other for the next thirty-plus seconds of approach.)
Edited (closed parentheses, we're not paying to air-condition the whole entry) 2025-02-05 17:33 (UTC)
