Just in case [personal profile] spatch and I had had any doubts about the utility of the vaccinations we re-upped this afternoon at the Theatre Pharmacy, where you can still treat yourself from the candy counter after a shot—we got a packet of caramel creams, a Zagnut, and a Sky Bar—we were street-hassled for our masks less than an hour later while stepping out of Book Ends in Winchester Center, by a dude who thought comedy meant repeating the punch line. I may have told him to get under the earth.

Of my several attempts at a self-portrait from the passenger seat with my insurance phone's camera, [personal profile] spatch said I should share the one where I look as though I have just seen a bird beyond the window.

He got me a reprint of Claire Keegan's Small Things Like These (2021) and a card featuring a small black cat, adorably rolled over, with sincere green eyes.

I was floored when I found out a few years back that Zagnut was a real candy bar. I'd assumed it was a blatantly fake brand name made up by the scriptwriters of Beetlejuice (1988).

(Was equally shocked to learn Piggly-Wigglies are a real chain of... restaurants? grocery stores? I'm still not sure.)

Edit -- boo to the anti-mask guy.

(Grocery stores, one of the first to eschew counter service in the South in favor of the A&P “get it yourself” model.)

It's funny because they're the poor people grocery store? And yet the charming anthropomorphic pig has carried them into Literature. (This also happened with Winn-Dixie, which was the trashy grocery store and is now Aldi.)

Yeah no sorry the car is um... unable to cross the Maryland line because it will... melt?
