Will we sharpen our old bones on midwinter's whetstone?

The yew trees outside the windows are padded with snow: a real winter fall for a northern solstice, as crisply dark as a longest night should be. The sky is still too overcast to look for the last meteors of the year, whose radiant is in the pole-pacing bears. I can believe in their candles streaking out of sight, like the sun nudging back that fraction of a low gold flare. Happy solstice! So time spindles on.

it was! i have very dark skies at home, but I left the fantastic spray of stars to join the winter Solstice LongDance in the city for the wee hours of the night - my 26th year participating in this event, and my second year in the last 14 not being the person in charge of it. i have passed that cup to a new coordinator and it's a pleasure to be free to come in and out without any obligation beyond the love of it.
