Shining broken glass washed up on a beach

It turns out I did not need to petition my parents to cancel their subscription to the Washington Post because they had never taken one out in the first place, but as a glass-rattling screech of the Overton window I did not enjoy the news about either it or the Los Angeles Times. I would prefer not to be told how fluffily naive it is of me to want to live in a democracy this time next year without any more of an asterisk next to it. Of course we have plans to vote. Of course I want it to matter.

I cancelled my WaPo subscription recently, or I surely would today.

We switched to the NYT because N likes the games, but I 'spect Danny will have me handle his on Monday.
(We both cried in the voting booth, without first warning the other.)

I was already rolling my eyes at them for some of their coverage, but planned to keep the sub until the end of the year, and I'll stay that long. As of last night there supposedly had been 2000 cancellations. I know at least half a dozen of the people who cancelled, so there must be more. I think we have learned more by the ruckus than we would have if they had just gone ahead and endorsed. The reporting at the LA Times has been very good over time. I had no knowledge of their owner until this happened, and now I know. Heather Cox Richardson's letter this morning has clear background (among her other yesterday stories)

As part of the trend, I am now a supporter of the Mississippi Free Press

and have re-upped by newsletter prescription to Teen Vogue.

I slept on my potential decision, because I hate not supporting their excellent staff, but this morning, I cancelled my digital subscription (which is all I had). I'll re-up if they reverse their decision, but I doubt that will happen. They're trying to cover themselves with high-minded bullshit concerning the decision, but that's what it is - bullshit. Gah. I transfered my support to The Guardian, which does two things; eliminates the guilt I've felt for cancelling my subscription a couple of years ago, and supports a truly independent mainstream press outlet.

The daughter of LA Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong claims his decision was tied to the Gazan genocide. If that's true (highly doubtful) the LA Times' decision stands slightly higher in my opinion than WaPo's

(Among the many comments on WaPo's news story about itself was one that stated print subscription cancellations would hit harder than digital, since digital numbers can be tweaked to hide the company's hits from their losses; I have no idea how, but I certainly hope a lot of hard copy subscribers ditch them.)

Someone online suggested that the _Post's_ new motto should be, "Hello Darkness My Old Friend."
