I got this result from one of his earliest plays there: "Jeremy Northam appeared as a frustrated but adorable composer closely resembling Ivor Novello." He also had a stutter and played the piano; one of the other reviewers added he was "either an expert mime artist or a very competent keyboard player."
I love the idea of him having an affinity for the role from the start. I wonder if he ever mentioned it around the time of Gosford Park.
