And I see your face approaching, I'm reminded why the ocean loves the shore

The afternoon's mail brought my contributor's copy of Not One of Us #78, containing my poem "Hagstone." It was prompted by a picture taken by a friend of [personal profile] ashlyme's and incorporates some of the cautionary attitude toward antiquities of M. R. James; it belongs to the train issue whose border-blurring motif extends through the stories and poems of Pamela Weis, Lynn Hardaker, Robert Beveridge, Marissa Lingen, Patricia Russo, and more. Please enjoy it to the accompaniment of Chris Smither's "Train Home."

It was a good day for music on WHRB, which introduced me to Lake Street Dive's "Making Do" (2021) and the Black Pumas' "Ice Cream (Pay Phone)" (2023) as I drove to pick up [personal profile] rushthatspeaks for a lovely evening which included sour cherry hamantashn from Mamaleh's and not actually watching any of the movies we talked about except for SNL's "Totino's." On the way home afterward it was Karyn Ellis' "Movie" (2005) and a spectacular assortment of Mexican rock. I am fortunate in the husbands I have in my life.

I have been cheered lately by this use of a kylix, this peat-preserved Bronze Ave village, and everything about this unnecessarily erudite exchange.

I love this "Ice Cream (Pay Phone)"! Thank you for sharing! What an amazing feel-good song (and what a great video, what great people and what a location--I wonder where they filmed it). Jiji listened and watched entranced on my lap. I am going to GET THIS SONG. ... Now to listen to the other one.

ETA: Ouf, well "Making Do" is very, very good too, though on a much more painful note, obviously. Again, I loved the video as well as the song (did you watch the videos of these? Because you found them on the radio, where there's no video, but then to share them you kindly found videos), all the people (plus dog!), all the signs. I liked the one that said "Guitar Solo" that gets held up during the guitar solo.

My subscriber's copy of Not One of Us arrived too--looking forward to plunging in.

And the Healing Angel's ex is bringing us hamantashn!! How's that for lucky? I adore their hamantashn (not that I have a lot of comparators, but I know delicious when I taste it). I bless them for their hamantashn like I bless you for always, always bringing me good music. (Not to mention kylixes, Bronze Age villages, and Latin ... boasts? insult exchanges? weird pillow talk?)

My favourite Kylix is still Apollo and his li’l corvid pal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylix_of_Apollo#/media/File:Apollo_black_bird_AM_Delphi_8140_-_large.jpg

The article on the drowned bronze-age village was good, but in my mind I couldn’t help but hear “That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp.”

1) all I know about Lake Street Dive is that my in-laws will follow them anywhere they tour, so it must be a good live show

2) That erudite exchange reminds me of when we were young and I was still smart! Ah, the young ladies and theydies we won by our wits.

I am just saying there is a reason I cribbed you entire for the hero of a swooshy romance novel. I mean, a bunch of reasons, including your useful tendency to sensible dress for the era in which you happen to find yourself.

*hugs*

I don't know how often the webcomic xkcd crosses your radar, but today's strip might amuse you . . .

Wow, "Ice Cream (Pay Phone)" is catchy (in a good way).

Congratulations on the poetry publication! The issue looks great.

Black Pumas made me bop; Lake St Dive made me cry.

I had the good fortune to have Chris Smither's first two albums back in 1970–2, so I've been enjoying him for more than fifty years (whaaaaat!)

One of the things I like about Smither is he delivers his thing. His picking is always intricate but not baroque, his voice (marinated in cigarettes, beer, and Louisiana breezes) chugs along, and his lyrics are allusive and non-offensive. Which is to say one of his albums is much like another.

If I had to select just one, it would be Still on the levee, a 2-disc best-of collection which includes some great tunes, in addition to Train Home

and 22 more
