She's lost in coma where it's beautiful
My laptop has died. I am not so thrilled about this. My presence online will therefore be somewhat intermittent until the situation improves. And until I find out how many of my recent projects have been irrecoverably lost . . .
Electricity, it's in me. Their machinery shuts down. Electricity, it's in me. Electricity and trash.

What horrible news. I'm sorry. Always print everything out. Always. That's one of my mantras. Back it up. Print it out.

In the usual course of things, I back up my work obsessively. The last couple of weeks, I was stressed out of my mind, I let it slip. The universe abhors an exception.

After three years of mostly faithful service, the machine just seems to have died—it will turn on, but the screen fades up into unpleasant bluish-white striations, like a sort of Plaid of Doom, from which my computer proper is inaccessible. It can be made into a target drive, but will not even sustain this mode for more than about an hour before it freezes up (or, since the problem seems related to overheating, melts down) again. I am annoyed. My old computer lasted me all the way through Brandeis. This one could at least have made a stab at grad school.

I only asked becase similar things have happened to two of my other mac friends upon downloading the most recent (2007-004) security update. But if you didn't d/l it, then..
bleh. M'sorry.
(if you did, it's fixable! I just don't know how.)

I'm sorry to hear. And I hope you recover your projects.
If the harddrive's intact, you could hopefully stick it in a drive enclosure and recover your files, at least. That's what I did last summer when my old laptop died.

If you need HD recovery I'll do what I can.
Hope we can still see you in a few weeks when we're in town!

I also need to take you to Back Pages, if you still haven't been.

I really, really appreciate both your offers. I actually took it to my father, who has managed to retrieve the stuff I really care about, like stories, poems, translations, all of which seem to be intact and uncorrupted. We're going to try for stuff like music and photographs later tonight, after the computer recovers from melting down again. The hard drive seems to be terminally overheating as soon as it's turned on. And the screen is conclusively dead.
I also need to take you to Back Pages, if you still haven't been.
I would like that very much. It would definitely improve my mood.

I plead innocence--my bad digital luck and I are a state a way!

I maintain that bad luck is omnipresent. But you probably spent all your electronic karma at BestBuy, it is true. Accusation retracted.
