Did Hakkai's backstory live up to your favorite character standards?

I love Hakkai, but I do find his back story a little disturbing. (I have two friends who are rabid fans.) I do like the Monkey Goes West sort of basis... I think my favorite characters are the Goddess of Mercy & Gojyo. However, I do no like the anime...I usually seem to be alone in this assessment. Love the manga though.
