But that night, dead friends visited me in dreams
A genuine social interaction!
choco_frosh and P. came by for about an hour, having tested safely after holidays and travel; I am drop-dead tired and coming off an intense couple of days with my niece, but it was lovely to see them. Schreiber' had brought me a packet of cheddar and chive crisps from England and a Bulletin of the German Historical Institute containing an article on golems. I was able to give P. his Christmas present of Lloyd Alexander's The Beggar Queen (1984), which had been mysteriously harder to find than the previous two-thirds of its trilogy. It was agreed that our new apartment is better laid out than our old one and that the absence of a door from the three-season porch doesn't bewilder just me. I am beginning to think the construction on our front porch and the upstairs apartment is finally finished, which means any second now we can look forward to the noise of neighbors moving in. I feel strongly it is not supposed to be raining for New Year's Eve.

It's raining in Los Angeles too, which seems to happen here more often than not on New Year's Eve, despite our usual drought conditions.

I haven't had any outside of family in . . . not literally years, but very close to it? I do not believe that doctors' appointments count.

It feels like it should be interpretable as some kind of ritual of renewal, even if it's just meteorology.

It was a really nice time! I am definitely still skeptical of the full-bore plunge into the social whirl, but I remember that people used to come over.

I would definitely have taken it! It didn't occur to me to ask around.

We had fireworks about half an hour ago! I am not used to them around here for New Year's. Fourth of July, yes, and then a sort of awful creep throughout the entire summer which personally I hate.

Nice! Happy New Year.

I mean, The Kestrel is the one that's in the top five books that made me. But that doesn't make The Beggar Queen UNimportant.

Entirely separate from needing to find a copy for my ungodchild, I was thinking recently about the abolition of the monarchy of Westmark. I had been explaining Austria at the end of World War I.

I will be interested to hear what you think of that.
