But that night, dead friends visited me in dreams

A genuine social interaction! [personal profile] choco_frosh and P. came by for about an hour, having tested safely after holidays and travel; I am drop-dead tired and coming off an intense couple of days with my niece, but it was lovely to see them. Schreiber' had brought me a packet of cheddar and chive crisps from England and a Bulletin of the German Historical Institute containing an article on golems. I was able to give P. his Christmas present of Lloyd Alexander's The Beggar Queen (1984), which had been mysteriously harder to find than the previous two-thirds of its trilogy. It was agreed that our new apartment is better laid out than our old one and that the absence of a door from the three-season porch doesn't bewilder just me. I am beginning to think the construction on our front porch and the upstairs apartment is finally finished, which means any second now we can look forward to the noise of neighbors moving in. I feel strongly it is not supposed to be raining for New Year's Eve.

Actual social interaction!

It's raining in Los Angeles too, which seems to happen here more often than not on New Year's Eve, despite our usual drought conditions.

Both the cheddar and chive crisps and the article on golems sound great, and that they come in the context of a pleasant in-person friend-visit is even better.

Ah, I wish I'd known you were looking for The Beggar Queen! I donated my Westmark trilogy set to Goodwill recently...

Was raining much of the day here, but I think it may have eased off, at least for now. Just heard the faint sound of a few fireworks going off outside.

Update— I’m about six minutes into 2023 and there were several brief but professional-looking fireworks displays along the lakeshore at midnight (I live in a tower and have a good view of such things from the living-room window).

Well, you gotta have The Beggar Queen.

I mean, The Kestrel is the one that's in the top five books that made me. But that doesn't make The Beggar Queen UNimportant.

I am just coming up on that bit of Iron and Blood: A Military History of the German-Speaking Peoples Since 1500. Good times.

I'm as far as 1913, so I can see that it is not in fact an infinite book. So far I think very well of it indeed; actual review coming in the next few days.
