That's sad news. I was thinking about the Uhura character just recently. In early July, I attended the Thoreau Annual Gathering in Concord, which always attracts a wide variety of folks from around the world and down the street--scholars of literature, religion, and history; scientists and naturalists; nature writers and poets; mystics and environmental activists; cranks and enthusiasts. (Many of these categories are, of course, overlapping, just as they overlapped in Thoreau himself.) Among the presentations I saw was an interesting one by a Gathering regular, whose day job is as a movement therapist, and whose passion is science fiction. Her talk asked the question, "Was Thoreau a Trekkie?" She spoke about growing up as an introvert in an extroverted family and as part of a culture, that of black America, which she argued also tended towards extroversion. In that context, she spoke about the importance to her of both Thoreau and Uhura. She saw them as introverts dedicated to connection and communication. She concluded that Thoreau was, in fact, a Trekkie, and that if he had appeared on the show, he would have been Uhura.
