I'm prone to swing at mirrors

I did not get a picture of the deer I encountered this evening while walking within a ten-minute radius of my parents' house. It was roan-red, unantlered, browsing behind the hedge of a suburban lawn. I was surprised to see it; it moved quietly away through the screen of trees at the side of the house. We have had coyotes and foxes and uncountable rabbits in this area for years now, but I don't ever remember street-roaming deer.

I got a very bad picture of the little astronaut who trotted audaciously up the stairs to the sun porch once his sister had jimmied the closed but signally not locked door because I was engaged primarily in preventing him from further exploration, but he can be glimpsed looking back to his handler for instructions. She made a bolt for the forbidden territory herself while I was in the process of returning him. Both cats were successfully gathered and replaced so that my mother can keep breathing in her own home. I had naturally been on the phone with [personal profile] spatch when the incursion occurred.

a basso profundo "GONK!!" that makes me think of that one rabbinic argument that the plague of frog in Egypt was actually just one kaiju frog.

If anyone should write that story, it's you!

I did have a fox cub, well, more of a fox yearling, on my drive on Thursday night when I stuck my head out of the window to see if I could spot the one screaming. I think the screaming may have been its sibling further down the street, which it ran off to join, though it's entirely possible there were three of them.

We had deer in the backyard once, which I think is in some ways odder than having them regularly. I don't think the coyotes get any closer to us than the fitness path.

Oooh, a deer that just ghosted away rather than leaping in a panic.

As for your cats, those little conspirators. It is alarming when they team up. We used to think Ninja was the mischief-maker and Nuit just went along for the ride because she is fond of her brother. But she has several tricks up her non-existent sleeves.

Autolycus is the purriest astronaut ever to grace planet Terra. :) I'd call him a K'zintosh, to Hestia's K'zinret, but neither one strikes me as all that vicious. Catians, maybe, but they'd be tiny members of that species.

I find myself wishing I could cuddle a fuzzy adventurer kitty or two. Alas, no dice.

Adventure kitties!

Deer are about as numerous as squirrels where I am - the fawns are adorable and the adults are generally unimpressed by humans.
