But ten times worth the living

So far today—

1. I learned that Elvira, Mistress of the Dark has come out as bi.

2. I missed when it happened last summer, but Peggy Seeger has released an album dedicated to Irene Pyper-Scott, her partner since 1989 and her wife since 2006: Love Unbidden (2020).

3. Lil Nas X covered "Jolene."

That's all news I like.

Wow that version of Jolene is so beautifully done. I felt such an impact watching it. Especially the line of “you could have your pick of men/but I could never love again.” I feel like a lot of singers blow past that, but this has a quiet urgency to it that just feels more important in this queer context. I’ve heard the song queered before, but usually more angry.

Yes, it was really nice to hear a serious version, and queer at that. And his voice just shines!

This is a perceptive review of a beautiful performance. I noticed those lines too.

I've been acquainted with that song for most of its life and always found that line objectionable. No doubt it's true for some people (could never love again) but I'm sure the whole trope about finding and/or keeping "the one" has caused emotional damage over time, and potentially led to people staying in abusive relationships. He really sells it, though.

Oh that is absolutely true. I honestly find the whole premise of the song ridiculous/objectionable. The singer coming after the woman that their partner is cheating with (or thinking about cheating with)instead of talking to their partner? And you are so right that the trope of "the one" can be extremely damaging.

All that said...for some reason I still really like the song. And he definitely sells it in a gut-punch kind of way.
