When he was a tiny kitten, the runt of the litter, a soot-sprite handful of black fluff with innumerable claws, Autolycus crept onto my shoulder and nestled under my hair.
Seven years later, he sees no reason to change his favorite perch.
Awwwwww! <3 I want to pet him, but alas, the screen and multiple states are in the way. Please pass along some love to the most excellent kitty? May you and he have many more years of shoulder-perching, purring, and general marvelousness together.
After a year and a half with our extremely statuesque and sedentary beast, I've almost forgotten what it's like to encounter cats who possess the inclination and ability to perch!

Autolycus and Hestia are extremely oriented toward the high ground. He will swarm up me if he can get enough purchase on my clothes, or me. Mount Book Stack and the cardboard box on top of the refrigerator known as Fort Defiance are also favorite locations. We really should have gotten them one of those eight-foot cat trees.
Ninja is also a shoulder cat, afflicting -- excuse me, I mean, honoring, and I actually do mean it -- mostly Lydy, but also for some reason wanting very much to climb up on my shoulders only when I'm doing laundry. Of course I let him. When Eric used to stay over here for our dates, Ninja rode on his shoulders while he made coffee. I thought that might mean I could bear Ninja upstairs and show him off to David, but apparently I have shoulder privileges only in the basement. Cat rules. You can't do anything but go along with them.

At certain angles, it's like acquiring a sentient hat.

We do in fact cheer him!

With a towel or a bathrobe (i.e., sufficient claw anchorage that is not the human shoulder), he can just ride around the apartment.

I like very much the idea of being Janus with Autolycus.

He sleeps on my lap and I have petted him for you. [edit] He woke and groomed his leg furiously. I think he says hi.
May you and he have many more years of shoulder-perching, purring, and general marvelousness together.
Thank you.

Autolycus has always been especially kitten. It's the soulful eyes. And the way he nursed on my shirt buttons for years.

Thank you. It makes me happy, if mildly perforated.

It's true. They are wonderful at maintaining their own boundaries, which is irrelevant to their treatment of anyone else's.
