Max von Sydow has died. He was ninety years old, but I always thought that chess game might go on just a little longer. I saw him first, as spare as an icon in wood, in The Seventh Seal (1957).

I first saw him in The Exorcist and didn't realize at the time that he wasn't really an old man.

The second thing I saw him in was Wild Strawberries (1957) where he plays the random gas station attendant and that was when I realized he was young. He'd been ageless as Antonius Block.
