There is measles in Boston. For the second time in three months. Everyone please check on the state of your MMR.
The new Harley Quinn TV series appears to have decided to go big with the anti-Semitism or go home and they didn't go home. I had not actually encountered the phrase "Jewish lightning" for insurance arson before. You learn something new every day?

ladymondegreen, a thing I am glad to have learned: "How to put on a jumper without disturbing your cat." I am also fond of this hammered dulcimer cover of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World."

Doesn’t make up for the second paragraph of course. Grr.

Oh ffs. As I saw somebody comment yesterday “unfortunately, being one of Today’s Lucky 10,000 applies to bad stuff too.”

Meanwhile, re: the Harley Quinn series, what the hell. What the hell?!

Words to live by.

I understand your point, but I have to say it feels perfectly contemporary to me.

It really matches the rhythms of the song!

It just feels like: what would it have cost the writers not to make those jokes? Anything? Of course not. So they must have really wanted to get them in there. Punching down is always so edgy.

But ugh, measles and anti-Semitism.

It feels disproportionately easy to discover the bad stuff. But I'm still sort of amazed by some of it. I prefer jumper-cat.

It's because that rippling figure in the original synth arrangement is ideally incarnated by the playing style of the hammered dulcimer and I had no idea until I heard it. I love this kind of illuminating cover.

But ugh, measles and anti-Semitism.
Two things nobody needs!

Wow, that's awful. I'd never heard the phrase 'Jewish lightning', either. "Go big" is the right phrase; that is a lot of anti-Semitism for six episodes of a cartoon. I mean, not that a little anti-Semitism is good either, but they really packed it in, didn't they?
The cat video was very good, though!

I really don't give an arse about TV, but I *am* sorry that this is filled with antisemitism.

What's that inadvertent relative of a dogwhistle, when the use of a term tells you something about the person who uses it?

I was negatively impressed.

An excellent cat, excellently accommodated!

We didn't even get the price of tickets to Baiae.

I recognize that in some ways you exist c. 1837, but I appreciate your continued existence in this our futuristic hellscape.

Thank you. I hadn't even planned to watch the show, but that doesn't mean I'm happy to know it's out there.

I don't think it's naive. I brace for a lot of things these days and I was startled. You expect a little plausible deniability.

If it's not even all that common a term, it was even more egregious of the writers to throw it into the script. Now a whole lot more people will know it.
The jumper cat and the hammered dulcimer were good.
I am glad!

I second your HELL NO. I hadn't actually realized Harley was canonically Jewish until I saw people start posting as much in reaction to the animated series. I am guessing she is not Jewish there.
[edit] Agh, this is sad: "On November 29th, Harley Quinn will debut as an animated series on DC Universe, once again giving us a new vision of this celebrated Clown Princess of Crime. Harley's Jewish roots may not be the central thrust of this particular take, but her heritage from the Catskill comedy circuit will always be a part of who she is, and the flavor of comedy we can expect from her. Zai gezunt, Harley."

According to the BPHC: "Those who have had measles in the past or have received two doses of measles containing vaccine are unlikely to become ill even if exposed."
If you have enough time before you travel, you can always get your immunity levels checked by blood test, just to make sure.
