You're Christmas without Boxing Day

Unsurprisingly, today I am falling-over exhausted, but have committed myself to helping my parents prepare for the Fourth of July. Have some links.

1. I am glad there were protests of the latest MBTA fare hike, since we are in fact paying more for less and the people paying the most can least afford it. I am less charmed by the narrowly averted case of Charlie on the MTA: "Justin Suarez, 21, arrived at Oak Grove Station in the morning for his commute to Cambridge, and brought the exact change for a fare. Only, he forgot about the increase. One of the protesters handing out fliers gave him the additional 25 cents to ride."

2. Good for the Globe for coming out on the side of the ROE Act: "With rights in peril, Mass. needs abortion law update."

3. If you were unable to attend yesterday's protest, variously identified by the hashtags #JewsAgainstICE, #NeverAgainParaNadie, #NeverAgainMeans, and #NeverAgainIsNow, may I point you toward their fundraiser? Information about further planned protests also available via Never Again Action and Movimiento Cosecha.

4. See also this fundraiser for refugees in Western Massachusetts: Good Neighbors Fund for Asylum Seekers.

5. I enjoyed this meditation on the icon of John Wayne and The Searchers (1956); it's much more thoughtful than its title: Tyler Malone, "On John Wayne, Cancel Culture, and the Art of Problematic Artists."

I had this idea of reviewing slantly appropriate movies for the month of July, but I don't know when I am going to get the time to do nothing so that I can get the time to think.

One of my friends is hosting an asylum seeker and her daughter, I think via the Good Neighbors program.

The asylum seeker and child? No, I haven't had a chance to meet them yet. She invited me to come out with them one time, but it was a weekend I was at my dad's house.
