Unsurprising, as it is (undeservedly) obscure. The primary protagonist is a "white" man, but he often interacts with natives. All the characters are (IMO) well-portrayed, and cover a wide variety of the human spectrum.
(Also, it contains my favorite-ever exorcism scene, which is by turns spooky, hilarious, and touching.)
