I read two books, watched three and a half movies (technically one and a half were rewatches), and made myself a couple of meals. I did not burn down the kitchen when the rice pudding caught on fire. I did not go outside in the intermittently freezing rain, either. I listened repeatedly to Loma's "Black Willow," a song I am finding almost apocalyptically haunting, and interspersed it with O'Hooley & Tidow's "Gentleman Jack." I petted cats. I expect I will need to spend tomorrow working and I resent it because I would rather be writing about movies, but as an experiment in aggressive self-care, I think this weekend was actually great. It was not uncomplicated. I would like to have slept more. I would like the inside of my head to feel safer and it feels much less safe whenever I am doing something that I enjoy. It was worth it. I guess I should tell the doctor.

But today I happened to be in the Actors' Church (St. Paul's in Covent Garden) with a visiting friend. I saw there's a memorial plaque there to Eric Portman (also plaques to Robert Helpmann and Boris Karloff), so I thought of you and lit them a candle.

(I am an atheist but it seemed only polite.)

Setting fire to rice pudding is quite an achievement.

It had not occurred to me that coconut milk and condensed milk together could be so flammable that a slight slop over the side of the pan would turn into a wick: it had never happened before. Fortunately I made sure to extinguish the fire before writing anyone about it, so I'm ahead of Richard Ayoade in The IT Crowd.

That was the context: I sent the song to a friend with whom I was talking about Anne Lister and then it wouldn't get out of my head. I ended up listening to a whole raft of O'Hooley & Tidow to try to shake it, but it's an earworm.

Thank you. I don't think I knew there was a plaque to Portman anywhere. (Helpmann has an award named after him and I think that many horror fans must have shrines to Karloff.) I'm glad there is.

It's the BBC's Queers (2017), a kaleidoscope of the British queer century in eight short one-character plays, which came out last summer to great fanfare—there was a stage run at the Old Vic as well—and then I lost track of finding out whether it had ever aired in the U.S. because I lost track of most things in the second half of last year. It looks like it did, but more importantly it looks as though I can find the episodes on YouTube, which means I can now watch them and I will because did I mention BEN WHISHAW, WORLD WAR I?
