I wonder if Sinatra had something to do with the anti-gun swerve at the end; he may not have been at his most influential in '54 but he definitely leaned quite left.

TCM tells me he took the part right after his Oscar win for From Here to Eternity (1953), so he may in fact have had some clout. (And good for him, if so.)
