I think it may not have made it out of Russian news until September. I didn't start seeing notices until mid-September either.
He (and also Vasili Arkipov) deserve to be remembered with honour for centuries.
I would love it if his birthday became a holiday even after his death—or the anniversary of the close call he averted with World War III. Thank-you cake sounds like a good tradition to me.
