Holy carp and sea squid--thank you for seeing this and reporting on it so eloquently so that I never, ever have to.
You're welcome. I was not expecting to take a bullet when I sat down to watch this film!
As reiterated in other comments, the thing that really drives me up the wall about this movie is that the core of it, the romance, the coming back to life, is really wonderful. Or it is wonderful if you can perform the high-wire double-vision act of viewing it separately from all the the racist douchecanoeing which surrounds it and penetrates it and binds its universe together, which got more and more difficult as things went on. Would be wonderful if it were in a different movie. I wish it had been.
And what you say about the story having been possible without it. Putting it in was a deliberate thing. Makes me tear my hair.
It is possible that it's an artifact of the original story, but even if so, it means the original author made that decision. Characters do not just come into being in a void. They are not, like their creators, subject to the randomness of the universe. And this is a decision I wish someone had made another way.
