Ghosts and time, stories that don't explain any more than they need to, people who are complicated and sympathetic and not at all human; I am even willing to forgive it the occasional ropey special effect, although really there's only been one of those in the third serial and it was the usual problem of showing too much.

Diamond, Sapphire, and Steel aren't elements, either. My Doylistic guess is that the protagonists' names came first and then the idea of defining them in the general direction of the periodic table, but I would have to read things like interviews to be sure and right now I'm just watching the show.
