...perhaps Jet is a standin for Carbon?
As Sapphire is a standin for aluminium oxide? I think you're onto it. After all, Carbon sounds like a kitchen disaster and Aluminium like the tinfoil it was wrapped in. Jet and Sapphire are much cooler names.
