Yes, it sounds as if Steve is eager to have us all think of Anna as a femme fatale when really he's pretty fatal himself, to himself.

He may even believe it himself! He's just wrong. We thought afterward that the entire film could have simply been subtitled "OH STEVE NO."

Sounds like a good film!

It was! I don't think I fell in love with it the way I have with some other noirs like The Reckless Moment (1949) or Black Angel (1946) or Act of Violence (1948), but it's really neatly put together and I like a lot of what it's looking at. It doesn't trigger its twists and double-crosses sequentially so much as they all sort of detonate at the same time, with about the same effect on the audience as on the characters. I end up wanting to describe it as a beautifully timed mess.
