I'm currently in the middle of _Ritual_, the novel which inspired at least some of The Wicker Man. It has a similar initial structure as the one you describe, but more tightly wound, flitting from character to character every few *paragraphs*. It does make a good introduction both to the large-ish cast and the stylish peculiarities of the book.
