Pod, shortened from Tripod, because I used crutches.
I have to say my first reaction to that is yikes.
Fortunately I got used to it, because a significant subset of the people I know are still calling me Pod years after we all moved on from Evil Aerospace
I realize this is not at all the point of your comment, but may I ask what field you're in? There's science and engineering in my family, although it isn't what I ended up doing professionally; if you worked in aerospace, I find that interesting.
I did, to my shame, once give a colleague an unpleasant nickname that stuck.
