I began paying attention (that's a nice way to put it) with S&S, perhaps because Robin Hood: PoT was also a hot mess, and liked his character and Neeson's in Michael Collins (1996) despite its oddly compromised ending. Galaxy Quest was far better all around than I'd anticipated. For whatever reason, Truly Madly Deeply didn't click for me, though I was in my twenties (somewhat after 1990) when I watched it, but I am nearly as unromantic as one can get while still being able to function in a long-term relationship. (Agreed that Stevenson is great.)
