Presumably people can drink more in fiction, especially fiction with any element of tall tale about it, but of course alcoholics can put down an absolutely astonishing quantity. (I recall reading once that ten percent of drinkers consume ninety percent of the booze, and as with financial inequality, it gets worse as you go up the percentiles.)
