It was a birthday present the year it came out, which means I must have read it before The Secret Books of Paradys, however improbable that feels; it had some of the same sudden effect on me. I think it changed the way I wrote water. It remains one of my favorites. [edit] My copy is missing its dust jacket, which I am sorry about, because I wound up really liking J.K. Potter's weird underwater mask collage. About five years ago the book tried to drown itself, falling into water from a position I didn't think was possible; it survived minus the inscription and the jacket. This was almost certainly thematically appropriate and really not appreciated by me.
