I actually just watched this - the first few paragraphs of your review got me curious.
I agree that "Lovecraftian" is a great way to describe the way they play with myth. I'm not typically drawn to Greek mythology, so I don't catch as much of the inconsistency, but this is a really bizarre movie.
I also assumed for the first ten minutes or so that this took place on the East Coast - and was surprised when a character mentioned that they were in California. I think that's a particularly interesting choice because it places the "on-land" part of the world in a region that isn't as well known for folklore. I think Mora and Captain Murdock seem more bizarre in LA than they would in Boston or a small East Coast town.
(Don't ask me why - I'm from the Midwest, which is rich in its own kind of wild folklore.)
That tarot scene tho. Woof. The clairvoyant may have been one of my favorite performances.
