Fifteen-year-old you was right on. The Walled Orchard is a lot more depressing as expected, but still very good. Did he write any other historical/classical novels and how were they?

I have read up through Saturnalia (1999), which is the fifth one; I can't vouch any farther. I am especially fond of the first and third, SPQR (1990, reprinted as The King's Gambit for some reason) and The Temple of the Muses (1992). There's now like eight more of the series. I hope they're good!
