I saw a preview of this at another film, and it did look gorgeous, and I'll say something about the trailer: it seems to have got exactly the ambiguities that you describe. I was curious about it.
From what you describe it sounds full of depth, and like you really get to meet the man as he is. In real life, I suspect my feelings about such a person would depend on the context in which I met them. someone who binds themself to the mast of a ship to understand sea spray and light? Way cool. I would want to know and talk to that person. But if I were a friend of Hannah or Sarah and knew about him through her, I'd hate him with a passion.
I guess what I appreciate from your description is that this shows a person who's a very mixed bag of admirable and deplorable qualities. I think society (and maybe I, myself, too) tends to reduce people to taglines and quick descriptions, and an overall D&D assignment on axes of lawful/chaotic and good/evil, but there's so much more to all of us.
