When all the sea's high ships have dropped beyond my sky
And last night
gaudior and
rushthatspeaks took me out to Mei Mei for post-birthday dinner, where Rush and I split some of the best scallops I have eaten in my life (thinly sliced and raw, with tiny crescents of tomatillo, half-leaves of cilantro, and a glossy red plate-smear of autumn olive and rose hip jelly) along with a dish of sweet corn and bone marrow that was like nothing I have ever encountered in a restaurant (it was topped with smoked mushrooms, dill sprigs, and ikura; an utterly unfamiliar flavor profile), Gaudior provided a full report on the extreme comfort food of the Double Awesome, and we all really enjoyed the cheesecake in a jar. It was a memorable meal. Then we went home and watched Hannibal.
Today it is raining, but we are taking umbrellas and heading (with B. and, possibly, Gaudior's parents) to the Topsfield Fair. We missed the Big E this year, but no one should go an entire fall without getting the chance to eat pierogi and look at fancy sheep.

So I shouldn't tell you that for my birthday dinner with my family, my parents took us to a restaurant that served two different preparations of rabbit on the same plate?
We really must come over that side of the country, soonish...
You must! You're the intended audience of some of these restaurants!
(Also, you know, it would be nice to meet you in person. I could totally ask you to sign my birthday copy of Being Small.)

It was ridiculous. Mei Mei is one of the best new restaurants I've met in the last year. They are just coming up on their anniversary and I've got my fingers crossed it's the start of a stellar—and long-lived—career.
Pierogi and fancy sheep sound good too.
Sadly, the sheep were out being shown when we visited their building, but there were plenty of elegant and rude and affectionate goats. We did see some fancy chickens, which were absolutely jaw-dropping. (The one that looked like it was made out of painted silk and black chrysanthemums!) And some very lovely ducks.

Will probably require me no longer having this migraine, but I'd be glad to. We've just met Mason Verger. And seemingly said goodbye to Freddie Lounds. (We are all skeptical.)
That meal sounds amazing.
They're indescribably good and incredibly affordable! That combination almost never exists in nature! And when it does, it usually closes in six months!
