Baby, how I ponder your shadow

I really aten't dead. I've been consumed by shelving. There isn't quite enough of it; I'm having to play Tetris with my library and it is exactly the sort of three-dimensional puzzle for which I feel I was expressly not built. The whole process of unpacking took several days to begin with. I am trying to strike a balance between spending enough hours on the books to feel effective and reinjuring my back all over again. It's been worse the last few days. In addition I am having significant difficulty sleeping—my bedtime got pushed forward past five in the morning a few nights ago and it seems to have stuck, despite being so tired last night that I was hallucinating lines of type across [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel's face. (No, I have no idea what they said.) And there have been doctor's appointments and I have to get my work finished. The combination means a lot of radio silence and not as much writing as I really want, especially considering the amount of time I spent on Monday reading about Oppenheimer and the Trinity gadget. On Tuesday night, Rob and I saw Tim's Vermeer (2013) at the Kendall Square Cinema. Last night the Somerville was showing John Ford's Stagecoach (1939), which I had never seen on the big screen. These were both good choices, but man, I could get used to not having to step over stacks of books on my office floor.

My sympathies on the shelves. I don't think there is any good solution beyond "get more shelves," and there usually isn't space for that. I'm annoyed when I have to do things like shelve books out-of-subject because they're (for instance) much taller than the other books on that subject, and that is usually the least of my worries. All of the "tricks" seem to involve either getting rid of books (no) or hiding books behind other books (also no).

I really aten't dead.
Glad to hear it!

I've just given up on piles of books. I salute you on continuing to fight entropy.

I'm glad that you aten't.

I wish you all the best of luck with the shelving and all the rest.

When Shira and I first moved in together, we literally spent days just focusing on shelving and weeding duplicate books. I cannot even begin to remember how many boxes we ended up with by the end, or how we ended up eventually getting all of the books on shelves. Good luck.

I really enjoyed the interview with Tim and Teller about the movie that I heard on some podcast (maybe Studio 360), and the movie's high on my list of things to see.

*sigh* let me know how that feels, I have stacks and piles of books everywhere.. and they just grow. I ran out of shelves too early in the game.

I'd never heard of Tim's Vermeer but it sounds a little like David Hockney's book Secret Knowledge -- and looking it up I see Hockney is in the film. I should probably try to see this at some point.

Sleep and wake aids.

Stepping over massive piles of books to respond... aka, no can has advice to offer about book shelving.

Howsomever, and ignore if this is hlepy in the least little bit, [livejournal.com profile] jonsinger has had a lot of luck with melatonin in helping him maintain sleep. And a fairly specific wavelength of blue LED light for waking. Microdoses of melatonin though, so, if this is something you haven't tried, ping him for detailed info.

Me? I sleep really easily and under amazing circumstances. I attribute it to being raised by a cat.

As long as you're not being consumed by shelving in the Howard's End sense...
