(I saw a version of Solaris, but I think it was the remake.) But I should look for some to watch.
I liked Tarkovsky's Solaris—see reply to gwynnega above—even if I can't remember much of what actually happened in it. I have not seen the other Kurosawa you mention; I was shown Seven Samurai (1954) by my parents in high school, after which my mother made sure I saw The Magnificent Seven (1960), and then in the last few years when my friend Alison and I were holding regular movie nights, we watched Rashomon (1950), Yojimbo (1961), Sanjuro (1962), Ikiru (1952), and Dreams (1990). I'm missing all his early noir and most of his famous adaptations. He is incredibly prolific and I need more time to watch films.
