I grew up in Oxford, where half the city is mediaeval and untouchable, while the other half ... is not. Going back for the first time after twenty years away was weird; I could stand on street corners and look one way and it was exactly as it had been in my childhood, then look the other way on the same street and every single business was entirely different.
