The Greek is far beyond me, but I do love your renderings, well above the others I've read.

I haven't actually read many translations of Sappho; I first encountered her in Jim Powell's Sappho: A Garland (1993) when I was in ninth grade and the rest of this sentence has been derailed by the memory that I was assigned to represent her in some kind of class exercise in world history. I don't remember why. I wonder if I could still find my notes. I was reading The Last of the Wine under my desk that year.

—in any case, I'm not sure I've ever read another book of her in English. I did my own translations at Brandeis. Anne Carson's versions are acclaimed, but I've only seen a few of them. I should at least know what's out there.
