My guess is that rapādu is probably something like brandy, much like the process used to make fortified wine (aka port).

It seems an easy sort of thing to be able to do way back when, so long as you've invented some way to make the brandy in the first place. And it'd certainly get you drunk.

Now to go out and buy me some pistachio nuts . . .
