I can't write outlines: my brain interprets them to mean that the story has, in whatever fashion, been told; and there goes the inspiration. (I killed several stories this way before I figured it out . . .) When asked to write outlines for academic papers, I would always write the paper first and tailor the outline to match afterward. Not so good for a dissertation. : P
