I've rarely had a story get to the three-quarters stage and then die. A lot of them don't survive the initial stages, though; and the halfway mark occasionally proves fatal.

But you plot your stories out ahead of time, correct? So at least you know, at any given point in the story, where it should be going: that probably helps a lot.
