Yet another nice touch in that sequence is that Herbert West believes he's doing Dr. Halsey a huge favor when he reanimates him (conveniently forgetting it's his fault the guy just got killed). West is a nasty piece of work and probably a cat murderer, but he has a sense of right and wrong, twisted though it may be, and he's capable of feeling indebted to the guy who gave him a second chance at medical college.
