That copy of Scanners sounds like the muddy brown copy of The Thing they trotted out every year at Toronto's Midnight Movies screenings.
The funny thing is that Island of Lost Souls and Frankenstein—archival prints, half a century older—were both in beautiful shape. But it really did add to the atmosphere somehow. I'll probably be disappointed to discover when I see a nice DVD transfer that the head explosions really aren't that red.
(Love the sound descriptions, BTW.)
Thank you!
Herbert's such an amazing little weasel, isn't he?
I really think he is best exemplified by the scene with Dean Halsey: oh, shit, we got someone killed? This is our best opportunity yet! He's so beautiful and snippy.
I was not expecting Megan's death. I figured Herbert probably wouldn't survive if the story going to follow the original serial at all, but I really wasn't sure whether Dan would protected by his status as audience substitute or whether he was going to buy it as a token of how far Herbert had gone . . . Honestly, I was half expecting Dan to get killed and Megan to be the one to reanimate him, thus completing the circuit: everyone gets pulled into Herbert's madness somehow. Damn. Now I'm sorry that wasn't it!
