Given that this post reached eight pages in its original draft (with footnotes in the body of the text: much less impressive than it sounds!) and was ruthlessly edited down to something that I hoped people might manage to read online without their eyes falling out, I worried that it would either be (a) incoherent (b) to people who hadn't read the novel (c) and everybody else.
