Pro lásku Boží započatou

Ivan Jirous, poet-dissident and manager of the Plastic People of the Universe. It is entirely possible I would not have known of his existence if I had not seen Tom Stoppard's Rock 'n' Roll at the Huntington Theatre in 2008. But I fell in love with the play, so I tracked down a copy of Ach to státu hanobení (1976) and now I'm sorry he's gone. If he did not exist, it really would have been necessary for Stoppard to invent him.

It's so cool when you're able to trace these connections: without this happening, I would never have known this, which led directly to this, etc.

May he rest in peace.

If he did not exist, it really would have been necessary for Stoppard to invent him.

I can think of worse epitaphs.

You know, you really are very interesting.

I need to write something as a treat for you, which I will do when the contents of the neti pot no longer come out my eyes.

...Aren't you glad to know me.

Well, I'm not sure I'd want to be a Stoppard character. Dying in a fire and being A.E. Housman: not really things I want to have happen to me.

Good heavens. I'd not want you to be a Stoppard character, either. I'd not much like to be one, myself.
