Spoilers ahead...

My "hm" is born mostly of the ending, which left me feeling a little flat and not overly enthused about yet another book in the series, although I'm entirely grateful that Harry is leaving Hogwarts behind. It is also about what seems to me to be a serious lack of depth in any of the characters involved. I'm bored with the descriptions of magical objects and places, you see. I *get it* that there are strange things to be seen and weird places to go in the wizarding world. What I don't get is how such a mix of folk can be so blasted boring, when you get right down to it. They didn't used to be, but it seems that the more that is written, the less is said about the characters, other than he did this and she did that and that's not what moves a book along for me. Harry and his crew are growing up but the only real indication I got of that is the incredible amount of snogging going on.

As well, making Snape bad was too easy. I was hoping, not for goodness, but for more of the wondering about his character, simply because Snape is one of the few characters that I've found interesting in the last few books. Letting me know right away, in the first chapter, that Snape is a bad guy, after all, just about killed the whole story for me. Maybe I would have had a different reaction if she'd have left this to my imagination for a while longer.

I can't be too very articulate about any of this due to a severe summer cold, and maybe my reaction to the book was based, on part, on the fact that my head is stuffy and things may not be getting through as they should. But this is not the only book I've read this week, and I did not come away from the other feeling as though a hundred things had been left untouched and the other book did not put me to sleep whereas Potter wiped me out every time I attempted to read it. I think, in the end, I might simply be over Harry and his adventures. And while the spine of my copy is printed upside down, even that small oddity does not redeem the words within.
